Hanky Pankies Appetizers

In the world of my favorite old school appetizers, these Hankie Pankies are right up there in the category some folks call "trash" food as 7-Layer Mexican Dip, Sausage Balls, Chex Mix and Rumaki. I made these for our Super Bowl party and oh my goodness they are soooo good y'all!

I actually drafted the recipe to the blog years ago and have made them several times, but just never got around to publishing them for some reason. One thing is for sure - there are just not a lot of ways to photograph these little bites of deliciousness to make them look pretty, but heck... the taste sure makes up for it.

You don't have to be from Kentucky to love the Derby. We watch all of the build up to the fastest and most exciting two minutes in sports at my house every year, and even though we're from Mississippi, we still sing along with "My Old Kentucky Home," a tradition that actually started in 1924. Us Southerners tend to connect commonly to things like that.

 

  Cucumber dill cream cheese sandwiches are a classic southern finger food at parties, weddings, a ladies brunch, bridal and baby showers, but truthfully, they are just as wonderful just to enjoy anytime served with a side of sliced garden tomatoes for a light, cool lunch.

It sure is hot isn't it? And it's not only hot in The South, it's pretty much hot everywhere here lately it seems. Well, these little tea sandwiches are cool as a cucumber, literally!

Commonly found at weddings, bridal showers and parties of all kinds in The South, they are a delightful and cool lunch and a great way to use some of those summer cucumbers. Most often served on thin, white bread, crusts removed, and sliced into quarters, and honestly, a bit addictive.

A classic southern pie, made with chocolate and pecans and affectionately known in the south as Dixie Pie is sure to please!

This is another one of those classic southern pies that's been around forever - and one that everybody has a slightly different version of; some use corn syrup making it similar to pecan pie, some use more eggs and make it more of a custard pie. Some use coconut, or raisins, or walnuts, or some combination of any or all of the above! And some, well, they add a nip of bourbon too.

A great Southern appetizer! Cheese straws are buttery, cheesy crisp crackers that make an appearance at parties, showers and just about any gathering in the South.

Far as I know, cheese straws are a very southern thing and so darned tasty!

Excellent finger snack for parties too. You are fairly warned though right here and now ... they are literally addictive. For a party, you'll likely want to do two batches of this recipe.
