U.S. Senate Ham and Bean Soup

My version of the famous ham and bean soup, made with a ham hock or ham bone stock, a mixture of veggies and Navy pea beans, based on the one served at the U.S. Senate Restaurant every day.

Senate Ham and Bean Soup

The soup photos I ended up with for my post don't really give justice to the beauty of this soup, and of course, the soup was long gone before I uploaded the shots I took. I can assure you of one thing though. This soup is divinely delicious! It was gone in no time at our house and I was left with that wish I had more feeling.

Buffalo Chicken Mac and Cheese

Macaroni and cheese, made with chicken, shell noodles and some common elements from my Buffalo Chicken Dip with Bacon.

Buffalo Chicken Mac and Cheese

I love macaroni and cheese in just about any form you can make it. My favorite, hands down, and one of the most popular recipes on my site from day one, is the 'overly decadent but so totally delicious it's worth making,' special occasion mac and cheese. I have a more reined in mac and cheese that I enjoy making a little more often too, plus I'm still working on getting that gooey, stringy version some of y'all like so much. I've made and consumed many batches of mac and cheese trying to get there, but since I'm a creamy mac gal, I just haven't gotten it to where I want it for posting quite yet.

More Favorite Soups for National Soup Month

A second collection of great soup recipes for National Soup Month from Deep South Dish.
January is National Soup Month, though around here it's been more like grilling weather than soup weather. Day before yesterday it was 76 degrees and as humid as a summer day. Ah well, 'tis the nature of the southern seasons, especially here in the coastal Deep South, though every once in awhile Mama Nature throws us a bone to remind us that we really do have short blasts of winter in The South.

I've previously shared with you ten of my favorite soups for National Soup Month and seems the collection has grown a bit since, so I've updated my list with this fresh rewind of soup recipes, that didn't make the first round-up.

Mississippi Roast ... My Way

A flavor filled roast, made using a rump or chuck roast, but with my own signature and minus the full stick of butter. A moist, tender and delicious roast with a wonderful gravy and a nice spicy bite.

Mississippi Roast ... My Way

There's a roast blazing across the interwebs and the world of Pinterest called "Mississippi Roast," and if you google it, you'll find it everywhere. It's the roast that broke the internet.

In the beginning of making this, like most others, I had no idea where the recipe began, or even how the recipe got the name Mississippi attached to it, because best I could figure, somebody who threw it together one day must have just happened to be from Mississippi.

Well, I'm here to set the record straight on that!

Grandma's Homemade Potato Soup

An old fashioned, simple, chunky potato soup like Grandma made, with russet potatoes, onion, butter, evaporated milk, a little flour, and seasoned with salt and pepper.
An old fashioned, simple, chunky potato soup like Grandma made, with russet potatoes, onion and celery, butter, evaporated milk, a little flour, and seasoned with salt and pepper.

Homemade Potato Soup

Back before there were things like Cheesy Potato Soup with Bacon and Loaded Baked Potato Soup, there was Grandma's Potato Soup. Simple, unassuming, not much more than potatoes, onion, water, butter and milk, really, but so very good and comforting.

I had about a half dozen potatoes to use up and The Cajun was still having a tender stomach from a bout with the flu, so I peeled those babies and threw them in a pot. The amount of butter here is just a suggestion. You can use more or less at your own discretion as your diet will allow you.

Unless you're not feeling good - then just throw caution to the wind.

Welcome 2013!

Thanks so much to all of y'all - those who have just found my little corner of the web and those who have been here from the beginning. I enjoy hearing from you in the comments here and the emails you send to me.

When I started this site, I could count the southern recipe blogs on one hand. Today there are hundreds of us, from home cooks like me, some quite ambitious to win you over from the rest, to magazine, television, celebrity and corporate websites, and personal blogs authored by professionally trained chefs.

I am grateful and humbled that you choose Deep South Dish as one of your many sources when looking for southern recipes and I look forward to sharing even more recipes in this brand new year.

LOVE & HUGS,
   ~Mary

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
