So, as if I needed yet another entertainment source to distract me, I subscribed to Discovery+ and I have to say, I really enjoy the channel.

One of the first things that I did, was to binge watch one of the new featured shows, Magnolia Table, after which I felt compelled to pick up Joanna Gaines cookbooks. Now, a confession.

Folks sometimes show up on my site here wondering where all of the wonderful desserts are that are often associated with the South, and that are usually found in abundance on the pages of many of the other Southern bloggers out there. I do admit, a post of sweets certainly draws a lot more attention and shares on Facebook for sure! Folks sure do love their sweets.

Though skillet bread has been around since pre-Colonial times, this biscuit bread was likely a staple during the Great Depression and probably most often eaten for breakfast, typically just torn from the cake, rather than cut.

Zucchini Nut Bread

A nice tender quick bread, seasoned with cinnamon and studded with walnuts, made using some of that garden bounty of zucchini.

I suppose just about anybody that grows zucchini has a collection of recipes for their abundant bounty, including one for a sweet quick bread.

On the other hand, those of us who are lucky enough to be the recipient of bags of that bounty, sometimes just don't know what all to do with them!

This recipe is for the latter of us.

Southern Sweet Potato Bread


A tender quick bread made with sweet potatoes, raisins, orange juice, cinnamon and pecans, with an oatmeal crumble topping. Serve with my whipped honey butter with cinnamon.

So, the calendar says that we've reached the Autumnal Equinox, meaning summer is now officially over and that it's finally fall.

Somebody needs to tell Mama Nature to hurry on up and turn on the air conditioning down in this part of the good ole U.S. of A. because the heat is definitely still on.

That's typical though, while a lot of y'all are enjoying nice, crisp seasonal changes, we're still in beach weather for awhile. We're pretty accustomed to it being this way, but at least it's a good excuse to start featuring a few fall dishes.

Over the holidays, I had intended to make a banana pudding dessert that I really love - it's one of those layered desserts, a bit of a take on banana pudding. With all the other holiday cooking though, I just never got to it and you know what that means of course. I had a bunch of overripe bananas on my hands. And we all know what we do when we have overripe bananas, right?
