Fresh chicken wings, tossed with lemon, seasonings and herbs and air fried.
Air Fryer Lemon Herb Chicken Wings
I love the combination of lemon and herbs with chicken, certainly one of my top favorites for a roasted chicken, so I thought, why not wings?
Afterall, as I write this it's football season and wings are just another football staple now, aren't they?
And let me tell you that if you haven't tried wings in your air fryer you are missing out!
Just a quick reminder.... if you aren't interested in the chit chat, info, photos, tips, product recommendations and such on a blog, as always, you'll find the complete recipe text with measurements and instructions, as well as a printable document, a little bit further down the page. Just swipe or scroll down to the bottom of the post!
I also love using fresh whole wings over those pre-sectioned, flash-frozen wings, that are often either very small in size or plumped up with saltwater to make them appear larger. Consequently, it also adds a significant amount of sodium to the wings. They also release a lot of that water when cooking and can end up disappointing in both texture and flavor.
It's important to know that other cuts of grocery store chicken like breasts are often plumped up with high sodium levels as well. Just something to note that when you think you're getting a low sodium product via chicken, well, that there may sadly, be some deception involved.

Here's what you'll need to make my Air Fryer Lemon Herb Chicken Wings:
- 3-to-4-pound package whole chicken wings
- 2 teaspoons cooking oil (peanut, vegetable, canola)
- Juice of one lemon
- Salt, pepper and/or all-purpose seasoning
- 2 teaspoons Creole or Cajun seasoning, or to taste, optional
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon spicy mustard powder (like Colman's #ad)
- 1-1/2 tablespoons Italian seasoning, Bragg Sprinkles (#ad) or a mix of dried herbs
Reminder: Just like ovens, individual air fryer brands differ in wattage and how they cook; monitor any air fryer recipe the first time you make it to adjust time as needed. Total time will also depend on type and size of ingredients used.
Today I pulled out a 2-1/2-pound package of wings from the freezer, so I'm only making a half batch, using half of everything listed above.
I'm also preparing my wings whole this time because it's just The Cajun and me eating them but, certainly section them if you are going to serve to guests for a party and remember to reserve those wing tips in the freezer for a soup base!
I highly recommend using an oil sprayer for air frying, like this EVO branded sprayer (#ad). I've tried a bunch of different types and styles of oil sprayers and got widely mixed results. The EVO is the best hands down. Each spray is only 1/4 of a teaspoon per pull, so you get excellent coverage, for maximum GBD goodness (that's Golden Brown Deliciousness y'all) but with very little oil.
If your air fryer doesn't have a set preheat, preheat air fryer at 400 degrees for 2 minutes. Add wings to a large bowl and spray or toss with the cooking oil and lemon juice.
Add salt and pepper to the wings and toss again. You can also use an all-purpose seasoning, like Everglades, Cavender's, Lawry's or Badia's Southern Poultry seasoning or even a combination of them.
For seasonings I'm using Italian seasoning, paprika, Creole or Cajun seasoning and spicy mustard powder.
Mix together.
Sprinkle half of the mixture over the wings; toss. Sprinkle with remaining seasoning and toss again.
I also had this Badia poultry seasoning (#ad) so added a sprinkle to the wings also. The name is a bit misleading as typically "poultry seasoning" used often in holiday dressings, contains a mixture of herbs like thyme, sage, marjoram and rosemary with pepper and often nutmeg, while this Southern Blend is more of a version of all-purpose seasoning with a mix of dehydrated vegetables, including garlic and onion, salt, spices and paprika. I use it on pretty much all of the chicken I cook and overall, I'm a big fan of the Badia seasonings (#ad)!
If your basket or trays aren't non-stick, slightly spray or brush them with oil, add wings in a single layer, in batches if necessary, and spray top side of wings lightly with oil.
Air fry wings 20 minutes shaking basket or swapping trays halfway, depending on the style of air fryer you are using.
Serve as is or with squirt bottles of a variety of sauces. May also toss cooked wings with your favorite sauce and return all wings to air fryer basket, all at once, air frying at 400 degrees F an additional 2 minutes. Transfer to platter and serve.
