The Peach Truck Cookbook Review

The Peach Truck Cookbook
It's peach season! Hurry up y'all because like Vidalia onions and Creole tomatoes, it'll be over before you know it too.

We have some decent peaches here in the southeast region of this fine country - a lot of Chilton County Alabama peaches make it down here to the coast, mostly at the farmer's market and roadside, and while occasionally you'll see some peaches from around the area featured, for the most part grocery market peaches down here are not anywhere near local.

South Your Mouth Some More Cookbook Review

Many of you already know Mandy Rivers from the release of her first cookbook South Your Mouth and her blog of the same name, but available now, is her follow up cookbook and newest release, South Your Mouth Some More! If you're already a fan of Mandy's blog, and have the first, you'll love adding this cookbook to your collection too, but even if you're new to her blog, if you like the way that I cook, I know you'll enjoy a copy.

Though Mandy and I have never actually had the opportunity to sit across the table from one another, I've liked her from the moment we met across the net. We've shared many conversations via email over the years of blogging and I find her to be not only funny, but very down to earth and authentic.

Cookin' it with Kix Cookbook Review

With this newly released cookbook, Cookin' it with Kix: The Art of Celebrating and the Fun of Outdoor Cooking, Kix Brooks is sharing a collection of favorite recipes, some inspired, but many tried and true, hand-me-down heritage recipes from his own family.
Disclosure: I received a copy of this cookbook as well as the promotional giveaway books free, as a member of the "Cookin it with Kix" blogger team.

As the highest selling duo in country music history, with more than 23, #1 hits, 75 major industry awards, and over 30 million in record sales, if you know country music, you know Brooks & Dunn. I mean who doesn't go back home from wherever you currently are when listenin' to Red Dirt Road?
What you may not know is that in 2015, Kix Brooks had a successful Cooking Channel show called Steak Out with Kix Brooks - where he says he picked up the secrets to a rockin' steak from guest chefs. You also may not know that he is a founding partner and co-owner of Nashville's Arrington Vineyards. You may not know that he moved to Nashville from New Orleans, where he once played at Tipitina's and the Old Absinthe House on Bourbon. But you will learn these things and much more from his new book.

Melissa's Southern Cookbook Book Review

Melissa's Southern Cookbook by Melissa Sperka, a labor of love, paying homage to those who instilled in her a love for cooking and baking Southern-style.
Wow is it hot y'all! I almost hate to say this because I know many of you are thrilled that summer is here, but it seems like it's been super hot here in the Deep South long enough now, that I'm actually looking forward to fall.

In the meantime, I've got a nice cold dessert recipe from Melissa Sperka, straight from her newly published, debut cookbook Melissa's Southern Cookbook - Tried and True Family Recipes. It's her Granma's Famous Blueberry Icebox Pie, a true delight and perfect for these hot summer days. First, however, I'd like to introduce you to Melissa and tell you a little bit about her new cookbook!

Book Review - Around the Table by Martina McBride

If you watch or DVR the daytime shows, you probably remember seeing Martina McBride recently making the rounds with her new book, "Around the Table: Recipes and Inspiration for Gatherings Throughout the Year." Besides having a successful music career, turns out Martina has a passion for entertaining too and, because it's such a daunting process for so many of us, she wanted to bring a book to the public that would show step-by-step how we can do it too.

South Your Mouth Cookbook Review

Mandy Rivers' debut cookbook, South Your Mouth, Tried & True Southern Recipes
Update! Congratulations to Katherine Kelley who said:

Thank you for your great recipes! You've helped transform this former Yankee now loving life in Mississippi into a respectable Southern cook, and provided loads of laughter as well. My southern-born & bred & fed husband sure is happy!

Katherine, please contact me by Monday, July 14, 2014 at mary@deepsouthdish.com with your full name and mailing address so we can get your cookbook to you!

I started my own food blogging adventure in 2008. Even writing that seems so odd to me that I've actually been doing this that long already!

In the beginning there weren't that many of us blogging about food specifically, and most especially about Southern food. Facebook was new, Pinterest and Instagram didn't exist, but all that's certainly changed over the past six years, and I've met many different bloggers along the way through all of those mediums. Some became friends, others came and went, posting for a little while and then fading away, and others, well, you just seemed to connect to right away.

By now, surely everybody has heard of Ree Drummond, self-proclaimed accidental country girl, award-winning blogger at www.thepioneerwoman.com, Food Network personality, and bestselling author of cookbooks, children's books and even her memoir, a romance novel of her courtship with Marlboro Man. I have all of Ree's cookbooks, but hands down, The Pioneer Woman Cooks: A Year of Holidays, available today on Amazon and store shelves everywhere, is my favorite one yet.
"There's food, glorious food in this cookbook,
and you won't run out of yummy things to make."

Southern Living No Taste Like Home Cookbook

As a food blogger, I have had the privilege of reviewing quite a few Southern Living cookbooks {affil link} and while they have all been fantastic books, I think this is my most favorite one to date.

Organized geographically, Southern Living No Taste Like Home: A Celebration of Regional Southern Cooking and Hometown Flavor {affil link} by renowned food writer Kelly Alexander, is like a culinary travelogue across more than twenty of the South's tastiest hometowns. "All hometown food is special, of course," she writes, "but I daresay Southern hometown food is extraordinary." Based on my website visitors, I'd have to agree.

Kitchen Stories from the Iron Lake Fishing Club Book Review

Recipes from the Old Shoebox and ... Kitchen Stories from the Iron Lake Fishing Club Book Review.

"There's nothing quite so sad as an empty skillet." ~Bob's Grandpa
That's the way this book begins as Bob's grandpa arrives in the kitchen from a good night's rest and takes notice that although the coffee is brewed, the skillet is cold and empty. Didn't take long from there for the other fellas to catch on and get the bacon and eggs going and it is a telling introduction for all the goings on in the kitchen and at "The Camp."

Southern Living Home Cooking Basics

Southern Living Home Cooking Basics: A complete illustrated guide to Southern cooking - good food made simple.

So much about blogging about our southern recipes is about memories associated with the great cooks who came before us, but let's face it. Not everybody had the privilege of standing on a step stool in their grandmother's kitchen. Some of us may even have had mothers who were full time career women with little time for home cooking, or who may not have even liked to cook. Enter Southern Living's brand new book, Home Cooking Basics: A complete illustrated guide to Southern cooking - good food made simple.

Southern Living Classic Southern Desserts

Southern Living Classic Southern Desserts: All-time Favorite Recipes for Cakes, Cookies, Pies, Pudding, Cobblers, Ice Cream & More

As hot as it was this summer, and as much as people had sworn off their stoves, much less their ovens, I noticed across the interwebs that there was one outstanding exception. Desserts.

Share a supper recipe on Facebook in the midst of the summer heat, even one that required only a quick pass in the oven and people moaned about the thought of turning on an oven, but share a delectable dessert that had to bake an hour and it's Facebook Shares Go Wild!

Southerners overwhelmingly love their desserts, no matter the temperature outside, and we're clearly willing to turn on our ovens on a hot summer day to satisfy that sweet tooth. Was this you? Well, Southern Living has just the cookbook for you!

Gimme Some Sugar Darlin'

"Filled with tongue-in-cheek Southern humor, here's a cookbook worth reading... and it's got good recipes too." ~Tripleheart Press
"Southern cuisine is the ultimate comfort food... created by people who had to use whatever limited resources were available during tough times, and we've had more tough times than not in the South." ~Laurance Triplette

I had the pleasure of corresponding with Laurance Daltroff Triplette for the first time a few months back, when she wrote me the sweetest email about my website, and after a few exchanges, kindly offered to send me a copy of her new cookbook, Gimme Some Sugar Darlin', to review. After corresponding with her several times since, I believe that Laurie, as she is known to her friends, and I, are indeed kindred souls of the Banana Pudding Republic.

I loved Laurie's cookbook from the moment I opened it and found myself quickly wrapped up in what was more like looking through a well worn, loved one's recipe box, served up with a side scrapbook of memories. I felt instantly connected to Laurie and if I know the readers here, and I think I do, you will want to order a copy of this cookbook yesterday.

The Next Food Network Star!

Food Network Star: The Official Insider's Guide to America's Hottest Food Show
Food Network Star: The Official Insider's Guide to America's Hottest Food Show

Yeah, y'all weren't thinking I was gonna audition for the next Food Network Star show were you? No, not me! Heavens no.

I am not a competitive person. Never have been. I don't like performing, I have no desire for fame, to be a celebrity, to put my mug on video much less a cooking show, or anything like that. Okay, I might do a video... someday. My goal with my website is to simply put out an authentic product that hopefully readers will enjoy, that will stir up some memories from days past, and that will nudge you back to the kitchen. I spent most of my pre-blogging life in a highly competitive legal career, but the growth of my site has been pretty organic, and I kinda like it that way.
