Crescent Apple Dumplings

I call these 7-Up Apple Dumplings, but of course they can be made with any lemon-lime soda, like 7-Up, Sprite or Mountain Dew.  The soda forms a kind of syrup, generally found with sugar in regular apple dumplings, though I have been told by readers that you can also use diet sodas for these apple dumplings though I'm not sure if the result is the same without the sugar.

These little treats have been around forever, but they are definitely worth a feature to remind you how wonderful they are so you'll wanna whip some up! Apples, rolled up with a bit of chopped nuts in tender crescent rolls, drenched in a bath of a buttery, sugary mix made from Mountain Dew, 7-up or Sprite, and then sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. Super easy to throw together in no time and delicious to boot. What's not to love? Let's make some!

Recipe: Crescent Apple Dumplings

Prep time: 10 min |Cook time: 30 min | Yield: 8 dumplings

  • 1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 (12 ounce) can of lemon lime soda, like 7-up, Sprite or Mountain Dew
  • Pinch of nutmeg or apple pie spice
  • 2 apples
  • 1 can of crescent rolls
  • Chopped nuts
  • Cinnamon sugar

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Melt the butter with the sugar, 7-up and nutmeg; simmer until the sugar dissolves. Butter a 9 x 9 inch baking dish.

Peel, core and cut apples into quarters. Unwrap the crescent roll and separate the triangles. Sprinkle a pinch of chopped nuts on the wide part of the triangle and place an apple quarter on top. Sprinkle the apple lightly with cinnamon sugar. Roll up and place into the prepared baking dish.

Pour the buttery sugar/7-up mixture all over the rolls. Sprinkle the top generously with the cinnamon sugar mixture.  Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes, or until brown and apples are tender.

Serve immediately with a drizzle of the sauce from the baking dish, an extra sprinkle of nuts on top and whipped cream or ice cream is good too.

Variations: Substitute 2 fresh peaches, peeled and cut into quarters or 1 cup of cooked sweet potatoes, mashed with a tablespoon each of butter and brown sugar and 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice.

  5. Hey Tammy! There are a few folks who use MD I've heard, but I have only ever used 7-up or Sprite. They're good for sure though!

    Pam, seriously?! You must remedy that!

    Larry, I had the vanilla ice cream sitting in the sink by the board with the scoop sitting in it. Served up some dumplings with the ice cream and put it on the table for The Cajun and don't you know, while my back is turned and I'm scooping another serving out, he ran water in the sink to rinse out a can for the recycle, and water went right into the ice cream!!

  11. Yep these have been around a long long time - I've always used 7-up since I'm not a MD drinker, but I know a lot of folks use MD too. Enjoy!

  12. Mary, I have made these using Diet Cherry 7-up and they came out great. Also I use Splenda instead of regular sugar. Pour a little half & half over them in a pretty little dish and OMG what a treat!!

  14. Made these for b'fast this morning & they were delish! I doubled the recipe except for the apples but think I will double the apples next time too. I used my apple slicer/corer so my slices were smaller but think the larger slices will be better next time. I used Granny Smith & Gala and both were yummy....I also used Diet 7-Up & only cinnamon not cinnamon/sugar since there was already sugar in the recipe and no nuts (we don't care for them)...they were absolutely scrumptious!
    PS When I doubled the melted butter mixture, it looked like an awful lot in the baking dish, but once cooked & served, it turned into a really nice buttery apple sauce!
