Did you know that it wasn't until 1972 that Congress passed an official act declaring Father's Day a national holiday? According to The Old Farmer's Almanac, however, Father's Day came about in the early 1900s due to the efforts of one woman, Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, who essentially wanted to create a holiday honoring fathers. Dodd, the eldest child of five other siblings, all brothers, and all of whom were raised solely by their father after the passing of their mother in 1898, from complications during childbirth. It was during a church service for Mother's Day that Dodd was inspired that fathers should also have a day of honor. She brought the idea to the minister's association, who agreed and settled on the third Sunday in June. In 1910, the very first, unofficial Father's Day was launched when Dodd and the YMCA honored their first group of handicapped fathers. Pretty cool, huh?

Since Father's Day is just around the corner, I thought I'd share with you a great meal you might want to consider for the favorite dad in your life.

How about a nice appetizer to start off with. Start the day before marinating the West Indies Salad and you can serve this beautiful Crab Martini to start off the meal. Please note, this recipe does include vodka.

Crab Martini is a great spicy starter - Note: Contains vodka!

Course, in my opinion, the beverage of choice should be Southern Sweet Iced Tea!

Why not start dad off with a nice grilled vegetable salad? My take on a classic spinach salad, this one is made with oven roasted vegetables, but could easily be converted to the grill. Simply grill the desired veggies and top with this wonderful hot bacon dressing. Pop by our salad collection for even more ideas, like Fire 'n Ice Salad, Fresh Corn Salad, Pineapple Buttermilk Coleslaw, Cornbread Salad, West Indies Crab Salad, and my full collection of pasta and potato salads.

What Dad wouldn't want this gooey, cheesy garlic bread to go along with that great salad too? Make it easy by wrapping it up and popping it on the top rack of the grill while you're doing those grilled veggies for the salad. Or maybe dad would like some homemade rolls even better - check out our collection of breads, biscuits and rolls for even more ideas.

Hands down, I can't imagine too many dads who wouldn't love a good grilled steak!

I suggest a good cut of ribeye steak - it's the best in my little ole opinion.

Want something different? Try my spicy sugar steak rub - Dad will love it!

Since we had plenty of grilled veggies on the salad, a simple side like these asparagus bundles would be great and you can even do them on the grill too!

If Dad is more of a meat and potatoes kind of guy, check out these yummy grilled baked potatoes - yep, you do these on the grill too! Or, browse our collection of veggies and sides, where you'll find things like Truck Stop Potatoes, totally decadent Macaroni and Cheese, Cheesy Potatoes au Gratin, Corn Spoon Bread, Creamed Squash, Sweet and Sour Green Beans, some delicious compound butter blends for corn on the cob and much more.

Don't forget dessert! What dad wouldn't enjoy a big pan of delicious, homemade from scratch brownies?  Chocolate not his bag? How about made from scratch Banana Pudding with a rich homemade custard, Strawberry Cake with Coconut and Pecan, Southern Peach Ice Cream, Mandarin Orange Cake, Perfect Southern Poundcake, or any number of other man-pleasing desserts?

Finish supper with a hot cup of New Orleans Style Café au Lait to go along with dessert, or maybe some homemade cold pressed iced coffee, with a man-sized splash of Kahlua, Irish Cream, or Amaretto, for a nice adult indulgence.

A hot cup of Café au Lait is a great way to finish off any meal.
