Yum

Typically southern food blogs and recipe books will provide you with lots of dessert recipes. Sometimes more sweets than anything else and even cookbooks dedicated solely to them. We do love our sweets in the south!

Personally, I am not a huge sweets person. Oh, don't get me wrong! I love something sweet on occasion as much as the next person, but you may have noticed there is a lot more savory than there is sweet in the pages of this blog.

I love a good cobbler, homemade brownies, and banana pudding, but my number one dessert has always been cake. Okay, maybe those brownies first, because those are the best ever brownies we've been making in my family for years, but then cake after those brownies. While I absolutely use cake mixes occasionally too, I prefer to make them homemade, as I find store-bought cakes and pies, and box mixes to often be heavily sweet for my taste, and I can control the sugar in a scratch recipe.

Although I do have a few layer cakes I've done over the years, I'm really not a very good baker, so the cakes I make most often are simple pan cakes, bundt cakes, or smaller, snack-sized versions, rather than tall, multi-layered cakes. I'm not a big fan of super sweet icings on any cake either, and the truth is, I usually scrape it off! I know. Kind of cake blasphemy isn't it, but most frostings are just overly sweet to me.

Of course, it always depends on how you slice them, but generally speaking you'll get about 9 nice squares from an 8 or 9 inch square cake dish, 8 big slices from a single layer 8 or 9-inch round, and about 12 from a double layer. A bundt cake or a 9 x 13 inch pan will also yield about 12 slices.

Here are some of my favorite cake recipes. Just click a photo or a link to check out the recipes!
