Kitchen Stories from the Iron Lake Fishing Club Book Review

Recipes from the Old Shoebox and ... Kitchen Stories from the Iron Lake Fishing Club Book Review.

"There's nothing quite so sad as an empty skillet." ~Bob's Grandpa
That's the way this book begins as Bob's grandpa arrives in the kitchen from a good night's rest and takes notice that although the coffee is brewed, the skillet is cold and empty. Didn't take long from there for the other fellas to catch on and get the bacon and eggs going and it is a telling introduction for all the goings on in the kitchen and at "The Camp."

Refrigerator Pickled Vegetables (Giardiniera)

Refrigerator Pickled Vegetables (Giardiniera)

Giardiniera

I decided to make up a batch of pickled veggies over the Memorial Day weekend. Pickled vegetables, or Giardiniera (meaning "the garden") is probably familiar to you from the grocery store shelf, but it's a super easy pickled condiment to make at home too.

Pineapple (Hawaiian) Baked Beans

Pineapple Baked Beans, often referred to as Hawaiian Baked Beans, have that familiar spicy, sweet and sour taste we Southerners love. Great with Atlanta brisket.

Pineapple Baked Beans

I have made my baked beans the same way for literally decades and never ventured away from them. Never needed to. They are basic, but reliable and tasty, and I was often requested to bring them to parties and functions over the years.

Homemade Chili Sauce

A homemade substitute for Heinz chili sauce made with tomato sauce and paste, lemon juice and a mix of seasonings.

Homemade Chili Sauce

I was already nearly done with stacking groceries on the belt at the grocery store, when I remembered that a couple of recipes that I wanted to make use bottled chili sauce. Doesn't that always happen?

A quick glance near the checkout told me it wasn't gonna be close enough at hand to just do a run and grab, so rather than having to get back in a line for a couple of items (and probably finding another handful of things I really didn't need along the way), I decided I'd just go home and try to make up my own homemade version.

Derby Day Menu Ideas

It's Derby time and here's a great list of suggestions from Deep South Dish to serve at your own Derby party.

Derby Day Menu Ideas

You don't have to be from Kentucky to love the Derby. We watch all of the build up to the fastest and most exciting two minutes in sports at my house every year, and even though we're from Mississippi, we still sing along with "My Old Kentucky Home," a tradition that actually started in 1924. Us Southerners tend to connect commonly to things like that.
