St. Patrick's Day Recipe Ideas

Top o' the mornin' to ya! St. Patrick's Day is right around the corner, and we have a saying down here that at least on St. Patrick's Day, everybody's got a little Irish in them.

For pete's sake though, wear your green, and wear it out in the open and obvious... because green undergarments just don't count... or else I guarantee that you will most definitely get yourself pinched, if you aren't showing your green!

Now, I know a lot of folks make all kinds of crazy dyed food on St. Paddy's Day, but I'm not big on green colored foods - unless they were intended that way by nature of course - and I'm not much crazy about green beer either, though I suppose I drank my share of them on St. Patrick's Day at places like Mary Mahoney's and the Fiesta... back in the day.

Well, the Fiesta nightclub is long gone, and while Mahoney's restaurant is alive and well, they sadly do not have the big SPD party anymore, though downtown Biloxi has revived it and every year the Hibernia Marching Society has a parade.

But, as far as food goes for St. Patrick's Day in the United States, one thing is certain. You're not likely to see a whole bunch of what folks in Ireland would consider to be "authentic" Irish foods, but... since it's an American celebration for St. Patrick's Day, that is okay!

Any number of dishes that are green in color, are shaped like a shamrock, include Guinness beer or sauerkraut, or are made of cabbage or potatoes, will work for your menu.

I have a few other recipes I like to share especially for St. Patrick's Day - like Irish Soda Bread, Colcannon and Irish Champ Potatoes, Potato Soup and Irish Stew, made with lamb shanks - just in case you'd like to try them - and those are actually pretty authentic Irish foods.

The rest is not.

Although there is always an argument every year that corned beef isn't a "traditional" Irish meal, it was certainly made popular with hard-working Irish immigrants arriving in this country with limited means and to low paying job, because corned beef was cheap and affordable back then.

Since cabbage with bacon is certainly a popular dish in Ireland even today, and since corned beef isn't a far stretch from bacon, I think it's safe to say that corned beef is fitting for an American celebration of St. Patrick's Day. I've included my corned beef cabbage hash and my shortcut corned beef and cabbage for these very reasons.

As always with any of my round up collections, be sure to check back for updated recipe links!

Reuben Casserole
A casserole of cubed rye bread, shredded corned beef, sauerkraut and Swiss cheese finished with a savory egg custard.
Not traditional Irish eats, this casserole of cubed rye bread, shredded corned beef, sauerkraut and Swiss cheese finished with a savory egg custard would be a nice addition.

Classic American-style stuffed cabbage leaves.

Smothered Potatoes and Cabbage

Potatoes, cabbage and onions, simply seasoned and smothered down in broth with a spicy andouille sausage, is definitely a favorite in the Deep South.

Irish Soda Bread

A basic Irish soda bread cooked in bacon drippings, with the addition of pepper and topped with chopped bacon.

Creamy Potato Soup

A nicely seasoned, creamy potato soup, garnished with parsley, cheese and bacon. For more potato soup options, like Grandma's Chunky Homemade Soup, Loaded Baked Potato Soup and Creamy Cheesy Potato Soup with Bacon, click right here.

Colcannon Potatoes
A traditional Irish dish of simply seasoned mashed potatoes, mixed with cabbage and butter, Colcannon is a favorite of mine. For more mashed potato options, click right here.

Mashed Potato Patties - Boxty
Transform cold, leftover mashed potatoes into a whole new side with these delicious potato croquettes. Split between grated and mashed for Irish Boxty.

Corned Beef and Cabbage Hash
Cabbage, caramelized onion, corned beef and pan fried potatoes make a delicious hash.

Irish Champ

Mashed potatoes whipped with a green onion infused milk.

Southern Style Shortcut Corned Beef and Cabbage

I am not a fan of corned beef brisket, but this is my favorite way to do a corned beef and cabbage, using a shortcut of canned corned beef and my basic fried cabbage recipe.

Stir-Fried Cabbage Bowl
Stir Fried Cabbage Bowl - a simple stir fry of ground pork, turkey or beef, cabbage and rice. It's quick, easy and delicious!

Noodles and Cabbage

Noodles and cabbage aren't traditional Irish fare, as far as I know, but I do think this is a fitting side dish for any St. Paddy celebration, so I've included it in our American line-up.

Irish Stew
A hearty stew made with lamb shanks (or substitute stewing beef) and vegetables, perfect for St. Patrick's Day.

Sausage Reubens, a sandwich spread with Creole mustard and made with grilled or pan-fried sausage and onions, topped with sauerkraut, sliced tomatoes, sliced jalapenos and white cheese, patterned after the 5 Finger Banjo Picker Sandwich from a Decatur, Alabama tavern known by locals as The Brick.
Sausage Reubens, aren't a traditional Irish food, but this sandwich spread with Creole mustard and made with grilled or pan-fried sausage and onions and topped with sauerkraut is a good St. Patrick's Day option.

And for dessert, I have heard that apples are a good choice for an Irish dessert so how about an Apple Upside Down Cornmeal Cake? If that doesn't seem to suit you I've got a few more apple recipes right here that might appeal to you more.

Or ... maybe a key lime pie? Why not? Limes are green, right?

Is it a salad? Or is it dessert? I fall more in the dessert camp because it's like a fruit salad and it's sweet. But hey... it's green!

While I prefer to forgo that cheap green beer these days, I could probably go for one of these instead!

May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May good and faithful friends be yours,
wherever you may roam.
May peace and plenty bless your world
with joy that long endures.
May all life's passing seasons
bring the best to you and yours!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
