Labor Day Recipe Roundup - Dips, Burgers, Ribs, Sides and More

A round-up collection of great recipes for your Labor Day party.

Labor Day Recipe Roundup

It's kinda hard for me to believe that Labor Day, marking the UN-official end of summer, is just around the corner y'all!!

The official end of Summer and beginning of Fall isn't for nearly another month yet (September 22, this year) and really, here along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, we'll be lucky to see any kind of seasonal change before October, maybe even November. Kids are back in school most everywhere by now though, and most of us have gotten back into that school day routine, and frankly are probably ready to settle down to a well-earned long weekend. The beginning of a new school year can be stressful for parents, and well, even grandparents!

I have my big list of cookout foods that most of you are using consistently every season, but honestly in six years of blogging, that list has certainly gotten massive, so this year, I thought that I'd round up just a few of my more recent recipes and some of my top cookout favorites for you. Just click on any of the links for more information.

In case you missed it...

Dips

The newest dip on my site is a Hot BBQ Pulled Pork Dip and it is divine! One of the other favorite party dips is my Cold Corn Dip pictured above and it's a good one. I'm a big fan of hot dips of course, but you have to trouble yourself over keeping those warm and that means the dip has to be stationed near a power source. My daughter in law gifted me with one of those nice three pot buffet slow cookers that is perfect for those warm dips by the way, but the cold dips stay nice and cold in a ceramic piece like that Temp-tations® piggy and you can put it anywhere. Oh yeah, and it's delicious! And maybe even a tad bit addictive - it may not look like much but go ahead and take that second taste and you'll see exactly what I mean.

Make it as "hot" as you like - meaning seasoned and not temperature - by increasing the peppers. The last batch I made, I use some roasted hatch chilies, so if you happened to put some of those up this year, go for it! Oh and with sour cream, a touch of mayo, ranch dressing, cheddar cheese and bacon, you cannot go wrong with this cold Cheddar Bacon Dip either.

If you lean more toward hot dips, be sure to check out my Hot Pintos and Cheese Dip, affectionately also known around the web as Texas Trash, (though I don't know why). This is a step above your basic bean dip, and if you love pintos and cheese like I do, you will love this dip made from refried beans and onion, sour cream, cream cheese, and my homemade taco seasoning and red sauce. I use both pepper jack and cheddar cheeses in this one and it is yummy y'all. Plenty more hot dips can be found right here too.

Here's a few other ideas, both old and new:

Burgers and Dogs:

Whether you prefer simple Sliders, a Smokey and Spicy Cowboy Burger, classic Onion Burgers, Mushroom Swiss or just a basic good ole All American Burgers, we've got you covered there too. Not a big fan of beef? Topped with Pimento Cheese or not, do try my Turkey Burger. Even The Cajun thought it was beef y'all and that's saying something! Hot dogs are sure to be on the grill too, so top them off with some of my Cajun Hot Dog Sauce. No room on the grill? Make these fabulous Skillet Burgers inside. They are fat and juicy and it's all thanks to the steaming method, very similar to how I do my Patty Melts!

Ribs:

I mean what is a Labor Day cookout without some kind of ribs, right? We've got you covered whether you want to smoke grill them, bake them to fall off the bone tenderness (the most popular here at Deep South Dish), do a partial bake and grill Memphis style, or simply stick them in a slow cooker and forget about them.

On the Side:

Half of the eating at a summer cookout is seeing what kind of sides the host has offered up. Start off with one of my great summer salads like make-ahead Next Day Salad or Fire 'n Ice Salad and a nice Fresh Fruit Salad with Lime and Mint Dressing would be refreshing too. Round your sides out with some potatoes, like my Ranch Mashed Potato Casserole topped with crunchy fried onions, or this marvelous Cheesy Loaded Twice Baked Potato Casserole that I promise you is just as delicious as it sounds. There's always room for a good potato salad or pasta salad, and you just gotta have baked beans too, right? Try my classic Southern Style or jump into a beefed up Meaty Barbecue or a baked bean medley version.

Quench Your Thirst:

Wash it all down with some iced tea and we've got a bunch of recipes you can try from good ole sweet tea, to my "diet" sweet tea, to a fabulous Southern Fruited Iced Tea and even my Southern Iced Tea Cocktail.  Vodka Slush (start that a day ahead) and Frozen Watermelon Margaritas are always a party hit among the adults too. We've even got some sangrias!

The Sweet Side of Life:

After all that, you gotta have something sweet. My favorite summer cake hands down is still Mandarin Orange Cake, also known in some parts of the South as pig pickin' or pea pickin' cake. Homemade Banana Pudding is a popular choice at gatherings of course, though a pan of my Homemade Brownies would be well received too, or just make an easy Texas Sheet Cake because nobody can turn that down!

Forget the Cookout, Just Give Me Some Comfort Food!

And, of course, if you aren't interested in the partying aspect of the unofficial end of Summer and you just want to chill out at home and relax over a long weekend with some good ole comfort food, we've got you covered on that too. Stop by my Gulf Coast Favorites for some of my great South Mississippi seafood dishes, local favorites and more, or my Southern Favorites and Classic Southern Recipes page for some of the best comfort food there is on the planet. Want to plan a cozy, sit down Sunday dinner with one of my favorite recipes like my classic Old Fashioned Pot Roast or Homemade Spaghetti Sauce from fresh garden tomatoes? If you just can't decide, browse my collection of links right here for loads of ideas!

What are your plans? Big party, cookout, or just chilllaxin'? Whatever it is, have a Happy Labor Day Weekend y'all! Food. Family. Memories!
