Fix it & Freeze it - Heat it & Eat it Cookbook Review

Fix it & Freeze it - Heat it & Eat it Cookbook from Southern Living, a quick-cook guide to more than 200 make-ahead dishes, with freezing and reheating instructions.

Fix it & Freeze it - Heat it & Eat it Cookbook

Southern Living has been coming out with a great range of category driven cookbooks in the past few years and I've had the privilege of being able to both review and share some of them with Deep South Dish readers. If you're a cook who enjoys the reward of having prepared, made-ahead meals in the freezer or making meals that serve double duty, I think you will really enjoy Southern Living's Fix it & Freeze it, Heat it & Eat it Cookbook.

Starting with some basic freezer essentials, like how and what to freeze and how long foods keep, the book then moves into more than 200 make-ahead recipes, each with photographs, and beginning with a chapter called Jump Starts, with tools for rubs and marinades, base sauces and pestos, chutneys, jams, doughs and pastry recipes. The book is organized in chapters called Double DutyDinner Express, Crowd Pleasers and Kid Cravings, covering everything from casseroles to stews, jambalaya and gumbo, chili, breads, sides, and yes... there even a chapter on Do-Ahead Desserts!

Every recipe can be prepared to eat right away, of course, but each also includes instructions on how to properly freeze them. Included are sidebar extras, like Make it a Meal serving suggestions with ideas for sides dishes and add-on items to complete the meal. There are alsoTest Kitchen Tip tidbits and Shortcut Secrets scattered around to help you with preparation and to save more time.

Double Duty

French Onion Pot Roast
In the Double Duty chapter, you'll find recipes like Sloppy Joes that transform into a Sloppy Joe Shepherd's Pie, a Ragu alla Bolognese that becomes Florentine Lasagna Rolls, Barbecued Chicken to Brunswick Stew and a Brown Sugar Tenderloin that becomes delicious Pork Fajitas - just to name a few. I made the French Onion Pot Roast above, that later turned into these French Dip Sandwiches.

French Dip Sandwiches

Dinner Express

Cheesy Sausage and Tomato Manicotti
In Dinner Express you'll find recipes like Eggplant Parmesan Lasagna, Chunky Vegetable Soup, Tex Mex Lasagna, Okra and Corn Maque Choux, Creamy Slow Cooker Chicken and the Cheesy Sausage and Tomato Manicotti pictured above.

Crowd Pleasers

Crowder Pea Succotash
Some of the recipes from the Crowd Pleasers section include bite-sized Taco Teasers, Hurry-Up Homemade Crescent Rolls, Black-Eyed Pea Cornbread, Kentucky Burgoo, Beef Wellingtons and the Crowder Pea Succotash pictured above.

Kid Cravings

Mini-Cinnis
Kid Cravings brings you recipes like Frozen Fruit Salad, Pizza Scones, Cheddar Twice-Baked Potatoes, Beef Lombardi, Pizza Spaghetti Casserole, Crunchy Ranch Tortilla Chicken, Creamy Peanut Butter Jammies and the Mini-Cinnis pictured above.

Do-Ahead Desserts

The Do-Ahead Desserts section includes recipes for White Fruit Cake, Two-Step Pound Cake, Apple Bundt Cake, Chocolate Ice Box Pie, Orange Cream Pie, White Chocolate Covered Pretzel Cookies, Cherry Bourbon Ice Cream and the Mint Chocolate Chip Ice-Cream Cake pictured above.

And remember... not only do all of these recipes come with color photographs but they all also include instructions on how to make ahead and prepare them for the freezer, the type of storage to use, and includes both thawing and re-heating instructions. If you enjoy prepping meals ahead of time to save time, this is a cookbook that I think you will really enjoy. Look for it at online retailers like Amazon, or in your favorite bookstores.
