A collection of main dish favorites, sides and desserts for Sunday dinner from Deep South Dish. |
Some of you call it Sunday supper, some dinner, but whichever you call it, it was considered the main meal of the day on Sunday, most often served earlier than the usual weeknight dinner, usually somewhere between 1 and 3 in the afternoon.
Even in the south though, I'm afraid that Sunday dinner has taken a back seat to the busyness of life, but I sure wish it would experience a revival. I think in this age of technology, we all need that time to unplug and reconnect as human beings with one another, and face to face... not on Facebook, or email, or through cell phone texting, but in real live conversation. My husband and I rarely go out to eat because I do cook so much at home, but I am stunned at all the people whose phones are right under their nose, so that they can read & respond to every text or Facebook post that comes up.

So put all that technology away for an hour or so, strictly ban it from the table, and gather everybody together for Sunday dinner again. While the family may be resistant and even awkward at first, I think you'll be pleased with the results in the long run.
These are just a few of my favorite possibilities for Sunday Dinner Main Dishes, plus two of my favorite homemade rolls. Generally they are meals that take a little more time to put together, to cook, or maybe require an ingredient or two that keep them from being a regular on the weeknight dinner table.
Be sure to check back as I'll continually be adding to the list!

Great post Mary. For us, Sunday Supper was either left over Roast Beef from Sunday Dinner, or Fried Chicken. Sunday meals were always a family tradition. I can't imagine kids bringing electronics to the supper table. Even though I love all of our technology, I guess I'm glad I grew up during a time where they didn't exist.
ReplyDeleteThe meat dishes alone got me hungry!!! I've tried something similar to the meatloaf recipe before but may want to try some of these dishes. I'm not sure how soon I may get to cook all of them. This is a 100% special meal. Keep up the good work here. It fun to ready. If you don't have a YouTube channel, you should consider doing one.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous post, Mary. There is a years worth of suppers here :-). Your family is very fortunate to have you in the kitchen. We are very fortunate to have you on the web. I hope you had a wonderful weekend. Blessings...Mary
ReplyDeleteGreat post. My family (back in a different millennium, 50 years ago always had Sunday Dinner. We were an active church family and 9 times out of 10 we would host another family or be invited to their house. And yes, manors were expected. Memories are funny things, but i can take myself back to those moments anytime I like. My father is gone, my brothers live in different states, my mother is married to the new love of her life...
ReplyDeleteBut I can sit at those family dinners in my mind and smile
This was a great post...
Be romantic, have a great valentines Day
Dave
I've really been making an effort to get the whole family to eat Sunday dinner together(with 2 teens out running all the time it's pretty challenging)I'm going to try one of those pot roast recipes this weekend!
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Amy~
Sunday dinner was the rule in my house when I was coming up and when I was raising my own. Nice plates, linens and manners were required. Now that the girls are grown and no longer living at home, my husband and I still make the meal after church the major one. Somethimes we even go out for that meal. Supper that evening was a DIY affair since the cook was tired from the dinner service.
ReplyDeleteI just love your blog! I so relate to everything you say. I loved Sunday dinner growing up in Kentucky and I hope my own kids can enjoy those same feelings of warmth, comfort and love I felt each week, even though they are growing up in the heart of downtown Philadelphia. Thank you, thank you for all these recipes that I can add to my collection.
ReplyDeleteAw thanks so much - I appreciate that! Hope that you enjoy everything!!
DeleteYou have spoken my heart. We try to get all of our children (married/single and this still at home) together for Sunday dinner between services at church. It is, indeed a very special time. Thank you for expressing the sentiments of my heart so well, and for the wonderful recipes to try. I subscribed for email updates today and look forward to your future posts.
ReplyDeleteToday I fixed "Crockpot Pork Loin roast with Cabbage" for lunch - it was awesome. I've been trying to have Sunday lunch at my house this year and I'm really using my crockpot. This has really had me searching the internet for a lot of meals. This is a sure keeper. The cabbage was great.
ReplyDeleteI recently found your blog, and I have tried a few recipes and they were super yummy! I saw this Sunday Supper section, and I had to take a look. I am a young mama and homemaker, and Sunday suppers is mandatory at our house. My husband and I both grew up with them, I look forward to cooking a special meal for my family after church every weekend. I have a few friends with families who are now doing the same! Maybe they'll make a comback one day! Thanks for all your great tips and recipes!
ReplyDeleteWarmly,
Tori
Tori, I want you to know that I think that is wonderful to hear & I hope that more people will make Sunday Suppers a comeback!! I'm thrilled you are enjoying the site & my recipes. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment - I really appreciate that!
DeleteI am posting on behalf of April Lee who suggested this sight and if there is some kind of gift or coupon she could get please give it to her for she is a pretty cool chic! Love the sight btw!!! :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks Tina!
DeleteSunday Suppers a must-Every Sunday Son, daugtrlw
ReplyDeleteand grandkids - Go to their home with all the groceries and spend the day in the kitchen - From Soup before to Main meal to yummy dessert. My favorite day !!! Emmie
Oh Emmie, I just love that! I really wish more families would get back to it too - our kids today are so disconnected from not only their current family but their past & heritage. Congratulations on keeping this alive in your family!
DeleteI wanted to say thank you. I searched for Sunday meal ideas, since I was having some family over and need something different to prepare. Your list inspired me to cook: Oven baked ribs, Shrimp Creole w/ rice, Steamed Corn, my famous Spaghetti and Cheese (at least to my family/friends) and Garlic Toast. The meal was a hit. Thanks again for a no fuss meal.
ReplyDeleteYou're so welcome Tiko! You'll have to share your famous spaghetti and cheese with us!!
DeleteWe have supper every Sunday as a family! I cook at my parents house and have my siblings, our spouses, our kids and our kids spouses or gf\bf over. Usually 20 people every Sunday! We don't break out the china...we use paper plates. We don't really break out the manners either, haha. But we do talk about days past, childhood memories and memories of dearly departed loved ones. I love Sundays!!!!
ReplyDeleteI love it!
DeleteThank you for the post. I agree with everything. I actually ditched my cell phone out of disgust from the disconnection it is causing amongst families. I started doing our Sunday Suppers last week! It was something we always had growing up. We might not have been the perfect family all of the time, but we sure were on Sunday. My mom always made everything by herself and we always had another family or two over. Sometimes the guys from my Dad's work came over to eat a home cooked meal. There was absolutely no fighting, no TV unless the Packers were on and the best food you could ever want. Being a coupon fanatic, I might actually have to get my phone again, everything is digital, even my beloved coupons!
ReplyDeleteYeah, cellphones have become a big part of our lives. I'm home full time so I actually mostly use a computer still and a phone for calls! I do think our society has gotten far too attached to them & it's primarily because adults can't disconnect - how can they demand their teens do??! I'm so glad to hear that you've started Sunday suppers together again though. I wish our society as a whole would get back to that!
DeleteThank you for the notes on devices, I am so proud that my wife has banned them at any meal. We always dine at the table family style. We do not have television here so that was never a problem. I am from the south so your site appeals to me, Thank You. Moved to the mountain west years ago. You can take the boy out of Dixie, never take the Dixie out of the boy.
ReplyDeleteI was born and raised in Mississippi and have lived in Kansas for the past 11 years, so my children do not have as many of the southern traditions on a daily basis as I did growing up but even with our hectic day to day life of making sure 3 children get to all their extracurricular activities after school and that at least one parent is at said activities for support plus fulltime jobs and now my husband and I are both in school ourselves to better our families life so the meals that I used to cook, on a daily basis when I was privileged enough to be a homemaker only, I don't have the time to cook those meals that require so much time but I still want to cook REAL food for our family meals because for me those meals are a very important part of family time, on weekdays it is typical just dinner once everyone is at home for the evening and weekends tend to be a late lunch or early dinner since I work 7p-7a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, so I thank you very much for your recipes that I can happily add to my recipe box they all sound yummy, and just reading your comments before your recipes was very nice it made me feel like I was talking to a close family member back home so Thank you.
ReplyDeleteYou are so very welcome & welcome to the Deep South Dish family! I hope that you will find some good recipes to help bring everybody around the table from time to time!
DeleteI am in the process of writing a historical, romance novel. I referred Deep South Cooking for traditional menu's for Sunday Dinner. Thank you for listing some recipes.
ReplyDeleteBeing a northerner, I wanted to make certain my ideas were correct. Wait until this book comes to the book store. You will definitely fall in love with this entire tale!!!!!
I'm looking forward to it! Thanks so much for your kind note and email and I'm glad that I was able to contribute in some small way to your next book!
DeleteMy favorite Sunday dinner is Lasagna.
ReplyDeleteOh definitely! That one hasn't made it to the blog yet, but it's in my cookbook.
