| Dry onion soup mixed with ketchup, mustard and sweet pickles, combined with cooked ground beef, makes this loose meat sandwich sort of like a deconstructed hamburger. |
Hamburger Sandwich
I just love this Hamburger Sandwich! I don't call this a po'boy because the sandwich isn't dressed and pressed like our po'boys are in Mississippi - for this sandwich I like the French bread buttered and then just lightly toasted so that you have just a bit of a crunch to it.The beauty of this recipe is that it's a quick and easy meal to throw together too - all done on the stovetop in the skillet. You can also make it as pictured, using one large loaf of French bread and sliced into servings, or serve it up sloppy joe style on individual rolls or buns. I hope that you give this sandwich a try because it really is absolutely yummy - enjoy!
First, stick some butter in the microwave to melt and then, let's brown up a pound of ground beef.

If you think this sounds yummy, I'd sure ♥ it if you'd click to pin it, tweet it, stumble it, or share it on Facebook to help spread the word - thanks!

Recipe: Yummy Hamburger Sandwich
©From the Kitchen of Deep South Dish
Prep/Cook time: 20 min | Yield: 2 to 4 servings
Ingredients
Instructions
- 1 pound of ground beef
- 1 loaf of French bread
- 2 tablespoons of butter, melted
- 1/4 cup of ketchup
- 2 heaping tablespoons of sweet pickle relish
- 2 teaspoons of Dijon mustard
- 10 turns of the pepper grinder
- 1 envelope of dry onion soup mix
- 1/2 cup of beef stock (try lower sodium here)
- Chopped onion, chopped tomato and shredded lettuce, or optional toppings for garnish
Cook ground beef in a medium size skillet over medium heat. Split the French bread in half lengthwise and brush cut side of bread with the melted butter; grill or toast in a skillet. Brown the ground beef until cooked through, breaking up to a fine crumble. While meat is browning, in a separate small bowl, combine the ketchup, sweet pickle, mustard and pepper. Add the onion soup mix to the ketchup mixture and stir together well.
To the browned ground beef, stir in the beef stock and the ketchup mixture; bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until heated through well. Spread the meat mixture over the bottom half of the toasted French bread. Top with chopped onion, tomato and shredded lettuce, or other toppings as desired. Top with other half of the toasted French bread and cut into serving slices. Serves 4, or 2 really hungry adults.
Note: I used Lipton Recipe Secrets Golden Onion soup mix. Some brands of beef broths and stocks can be pretty high in sodium, and in combination with the packaged onion soup mix, might be more salt than you like. A lower sodium broth would help to decrease that. To toast bread in the oven, preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Place the bread into the preheated oven for about 5 minutes per side, cut side up first then down, until lightly toasted and crunchy.

That is a really nice change of a sandwich. Umm that looks so awesome. Thanks for sharing the recipe. I always need new ground beef recipes.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! It's really good. Hubs loves it and has no idea he is eating pickles or mustard LOL.
ReplyDeleteThat really looks good. I bet my husband would like it too. Kinda like a sloppy joe a little?
ReplyDeleteyummy! I love anything with fresh tomatoes on it.
ReplyDeleteThat looks great! I've never had anything like that here in New Jersey or even in New York. Closest I've seen is a Sloppy Joe. This looks so tasty! I love that you put pickles in it! I'd probably use kosher dills because those are my favorite.
ReplyDeleteHi ladies! Thanks!! Well, the only thing that makes this sandwich like a sloppy joe is that the texture is similar with the loose meat. The flavor is totally different. It tastes like you are eating a hamburger with mustard, pickle and ketchup except that the flavors are intertwined with the meat, and then of course you have the fresh onion, tomato and lettuce on top. It's really tasty, different and my hubs absolutely raves over it - and he doesn't even eat pickles or mustard on his burger! Sssshhh lol....
ReplyDeleteI tried Katie Joel's burger recipe (think "Diner Style") and it's become a favorite. I can easily see the same thing happening with this recipe. Yum!
ReplyDeleteI'm not familiar with that one - will have to look it up!
ReplyDeleteThis is an absolutely wonderful and simple recipe! My whole entire family loved it!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds so great! Can't wait to try it.
ReplyDeleteTried these hamburger sandwiches the other night and we loved them! Found that it was easier and less messy to cook than hamburgers. Thanks for the great idea, Mary:)
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome Val! It's something a little different every once in awhile & you're right ... it's easier than burgers.
DeleteI made this for dinner earlier, I been wanting something different lately.. So I came upon this and I'll tell ya, I would def recommend this to try. My two yr daughter enjoyed this as well. Love it(:
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! I appreciate the feedback!!
DeleteThis has become one of our favorite meals to make with ground beef. It's so quick and easy, and nobody who's tried it doesn't love it. My daughter won't eat sloppy joes, but loves this. When I'm out of the dry onion soup mix, I have substituted chopped onion (cooked with the meat) and added a beef boullion cube and of splash of worstershire with the beef broth. If I'm out of beef broth, I add an extra boullion cube and water. It's always good and gone quickly. I haven't tried freezing the meat, it doesn't stay around long enough, but I suspect it would freeze well.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Lynn - I really appreciate your feedback & so happy to hear your family has enjoyed this recipe.
