Cioccolato Caldo - Italian Hot Chocolate

Brrrr... it's cold and tonight I am craving a steaming cup of creamy, rich, chocolate decadence. Italian hot chocolate. I swear, it's like drinking a chocolate bar. Pure heaven.

Italian Hot Chocolate
From the Kitchen of Deep South Dish

1 cup of milk
1 cup of heavy cream
6 ounces of 70% dark chocolate, broken up
5 tablespoons Hershey's Dutch-process
   Dark Cocoa Powder
2 tablespoons sugar
Whipped cream, optional

In a small saucepan over low heat, add the milk, heavy cream, and chocolate. Cook until chocolate melts, stirring occasionally. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder and sugar; and whisk into the milk mixture. Heat until the sugar melts and no lumps remain, stirring well. Bring heat up to a low boil and cook, whisking constantly until smooth and creamy. Pour into pretty cups, top with a spoon of whipped cream if desired and savor.

  2. Oh my gosh it was soooooo good. I still have some leftover in the fridge I'm saving for when the colder weather moves back in. We've gotten like a 2 day break - which probably means everybody will be sick again - because the 30s are heading back once this front and some heavy rain storms move through. This is actually the longest cold spell we've had in awhile. Anyway, yeah, that's a full set of Christmas china that was my mom's. She actually gave me an identical small set but when she passed away my sister and brother had no interest in it, so I inherited it. I have no idea exactly how many pieces there are to be honest - it's a fairly large set complete with serving dishes and all the little accessories - salt & pepper, creamer, etc. Which is ironic because though I did take over dinner after my mama passed away even though my sister and brother don't live here anymore and do their own thing, since I remarried, I don't do the whole Christmas dinner spread anymore! I do use the plates for hubs and me during the Christmas season though. Shame to just have it stored, ya know?

  3. I adore that cup and plate! I love to use "fancy" stuff when I can--when my SIL broke one of my crystal wine glasses (totally accidentally) she swore she'd never use nice stuff again. I told her that I'd rather break everything I own through use than to let it sit and gather dust in the shelves. Using it makes everything feel more special-I try to make sure we eat off our wedding china once a week...or at least monthly. And yup, I drink my water or OJ or tea from my crystal when I can. Makes me smile. :)
